Back in the day published guide books usually pointed out, in the first few pages, something like, “mountains are dangerous, therefore make sure you have the skills and equipment to meet those challenges”.

Not sure that ‘influencers’, keen to get clicks, will be as helpful.

It doesn’t help The Ramblers financial woes when they pay their CEO over £160,000 per annum, not to mention the other senior staff members.
Who are the Ramblers supposed to be looking after….the membership or their own lifestyle. It’s about time that all the local groups broke away from the Ramblers Association.

Did the board of Trustees know about the fatal accident that occurred when a young 14 year old scout, Ben Leonard, was killed when he fell from the Great Orme in North Wales. Also the resulting coroners inquest when the Scouts were investigated by the police for allegedly perverting the course of justice by witholding essential evidence at the coroners inquest. All this occurred when Maloney was Chief Operating Officer with the scouts or has it been conveniently swept under the carpet in case in tainted Mr Maloney’s not so squeaky clean image?

Great post. Took me back to 1981 when I completed it from South to North with the obligatory Wainwright in hand. I thought we had bad weather – Edale to Hawes was torrential – we swam it! but Hawes northwards was gorgeous. (note – i opted out of the Cheviot so technically I haven’t done the whole route! Our last day – Byreness to Kirk Y at 30 miles was enough!)

Society has changed – Mountain Rescue was started, back in the day, by mountaineers/hillwalkers for mountaineers/hillwalkers – with the occasional daft tourist.

Now everyone, their dog and their granny seem to be delighted to ‘make use of’ those voluntary groups.

I’m lost for words. How selfish. Even though I make a monthly donation (direct debit) to the Keswick MRT, I would feel duty bound to make a sizeable donation to the relevant MRT if I ever have to be rescued (I hope I never have to make that call, of course).
