Julia repeats Wainwright's Helvellyn route |

 Julia Bradbury hits the fells again this week in a repeat of the second series of Wainwright’s Walks.
Helvellyn is the destination for the first of the re-run of six episodes. The Watchdog presenter tackles England’s third highest peak via Striding Edge. The programme airs at 7.30pm on Wednesday on BBC2.

Other Wainwright fells conquered by the presenter are Pillar, High Street, Catbells, Helm Crag and Crinkle Crags and Bowfell.
Helvellyn has gained notoriety recently after weather assessors warned hillwalkers off attempting its summit because of the high avalanche risk. It was also the setting for two tragic fatalities in which David Burke and Michael Hollinshead both lost their lives in separate falls from the mountain, only days apart.
According to the programme synopsis, Julia reaches Helvellyn’s summit just as cloud and rain descend.
Alfred Wainwright rated Helvellyn highly. He wrote of Striding Edge: “Early writers wrote of Striding Edge as a place of terror; contemporary writers, following a modern fashion, are inclined to dismiss it as of little account.
“In fact, Striding Edge is the finest ridge there is in Lakeland, for walkers – its traverse is always and exciting adventure in fair weather or foul, and it can be made easy or difficult according to choice.” The programme screens only in England, on BBC2. |
