Police today named the man who died after a fall from Sharp Edge on Blencathra.

He was Alan Sharples, aged 60, from Lancaster. He fell about 30m (100ft) while tackling the grade-one scramble on the 868m (2,849ft) peak near Keswick.

Keswick Mountain Rescue team assisted in the rescue of Mr Sharples following his fall about 1pm. He was airlifted to Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle by RAF helicopter, but pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.
