Mountain rescue teams are continuing their search for a missing Perthshire man.

George Borthwick, 83, a keen hillwalker, has not been seen since early Sunday morning. A team from RAF Leeming in North Yorkshire, which was training in the area, initially joined Tayside Police and colleagues from RAF Leuchars in the hunt for the man, last seen in his garden in Pitlochry.

A helicopter from RAF Lossiemouth has also been used in the search. Search and Rescue Dogs Association dogs and handlers worked through the night to try to find Mr Borthwick, who is described as 6ft tall, with silver-grey balding hair and wearing a brown anorak, beige cargo trousers or green tracksuit bottoms, and black shoes.

The search is centred on the Rivers Tay and Tummel. Residents have been asked to check their gardens and outbuildings.

  • A Gloucester man was found safe after a major search operation in west Sutherland.

Police reported that the man, in his 40s, became disoriented after falling in a burn and banging his head. He had been reported missing after failing to return to his hotel in Kinlochbervie.

He had gone out birdwatching and was not dressed for climbing or mountain walking. He was found on a road near Laxfordbridge, outside the area being searched by police, mountain rescue teams and dogs and handlers. Stornoway Coastguard helicopter was also scrambled in poor weather, with high winds, snow and rain.

The man had left his hotel at 7.30am on Saturday. He was found in the early hours of Sunday.

Assynt Mountain Rescue Team took part in the rescue, along with colleagues from RAF Kinloss and RAF Leuchars Mountain Rescue Teams.
