A ten-year-old boy and his father survived a fall on Helvellyn today.
The pair tumbled 60m (200ft) after slipping in freezing conditions. Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team went to the aid of the walkers at Red Tarn, at the foot of Striding Edge. They were then airlifted by a rescue helicopter from RAF Boulmer and taken to the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle.
Helvellyn and Red Tarn
The boy has head injuries and his father suffered back, leg and arm injuries. They were with three other walkers when the incident happened.

29 March 2008It is almost unbelievable to me that anyone would take their ten year old up there at this time of year - totally mad, even if they were kitted suitably. .... but very lucky.

02 April 2008 The only way that their rescuers gained the experience to help them was to cut their teeth in similar conditions

04 April 2008Possibly, but I bet they didn't take them up in the snow and ice in their school shoes.
