A group of mountain bikers which had to be rescued from a Lakeland fell was criticised for venturing on to the fells without proper gear.

Nine members of the Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team went to the aid of the three cyclists who called for help yesterday evening. The bikers were attempting a route on the High Street range.
Rescuers warned anyone taking to the Lake District hills to be properly equipped, with torch, whistle and waterproofs even during the summer months.
The Patterdale team was alerted by police at 7.15pm yesterday. The mountain bikers had become disoriented and tired, and had covered less than half their intended route. A spokesman for Patterdale MRT said: “The group were poorly equipped and had overestimated their abilities.”
Rescuers mounted a search for the group and then helped them off the fell.
A map and compass are essential when venturing on to the Lake District high ground, the spokesman said.
