The 53-year-old from Mold, Flintshire, was tackling the North Ridge with his 19-year-old son when they got into difficulties in bad visibility about 4pm. They attempted a descent by the west face, but became cragfast.

Ogwen Mountain Rescue Team was called out after the pair rang 999. Team member Chris Lloyd described their location as ‘an evil, unpleasant route’. The men were advised by the rescue team to climb to safe ground.

They then met a mountain instructor, who escorted them off the 915m (3,002ft) peak. The party arrived back in the valley about 6.30pm. Six members of the Ogwen Valley MRT who had assembled ready to go to their aid were stood down.

Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team was called out to look for the walker after he became separated from his party. They were staying at a campsite in Glenridding.

A member of the MRT found the young man as the team was assembling ready for a search, and he was returned unharmed to his companions.
