Ben Nevis

Two walkers were rescued from the summit of Ben Nevis last night after they became disoriented on the mountain.

Police were called about 7.30pm yesterday, Tuesday, and alerted Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team. The team’s leader was able to contact the pair and two rescuers were sent to aid the walkers.

The couple were found on the 1,344m (4,409ft) summit and were walked back down to the valley, unharmed.

The Ben’s north face has 700m (2,300ft) drops and safe navigation from the summit trig point to the tourist path involves making a dog-leg to avoid Gardyloo Gully. Five Finger Gully, on the mountain’s south-western face, also presents potential hazards to walkers heading for the zig-zag path back to Achintee.

An estimated 75,000 people climb to Ben Nevis’s summit each year.
