A woman has died in a climbing accident at a popular Dartmoor crag.

The 58-year-old climber fell from Dewerstone Rock, near Shaugh Prior. She was climbing with another woman, described as a novice, who was unhurt.

Four fire crews attended the scene and her body was recovered by the emergency services.

Devon and Cornwall police said her climbing equipment would be subject to an examination, but they were not treating the death as suspicious.

There are multi-pitch routes of up to 160ft on the granite crag, which is owned by the National Trust. The British Mountaineering Council recently advised caution to anyone climbing the Climbers’ Club Direct route because of a significant rockfall.
