Clifford Wannop, whose body was found last week

Police said today that a body of a man found last week on Skye is that of a man who went missing last October.

Northern Constabulary confirmed the remains as those of Clifford Charles Wannop, 83, a retired vet from Alderney in the Channel Islands. His disappearance after going for a walk on 2 October sparked a major search by three mountain rescue teams and Search and Rescue Dogs Association handlers.

Mr Wannop’s body was found in the Kinloch area last Wednesday.

Repeated searches were made after the holidaying walker was reported missing, involving mountain rescue teams from Skye, Kintail and Glenelg. Police dogs and handlers; Kyle and Broadford Coastguard teams; Mallaig and Kyle lifeboats and helicopters from both RAF Kinloss and Stornoway Coastguard also joined the search for Mr Wannop, who failed to return after going for a walk in the forest near the Kinloch Lodge Hotel.

A spokesperson for Northern Constabulary said there are no suspicious circumstances. A report has been submitted to the procurator fiscal.
