Aber Falls, where Mr Gilbert's body was found by a walker taking pictures

The man whose body was found by a walker earlier this week at a Snowdonia beauty spot has been named.

Martin Gilbert, 45, of Abergwyngregyn, was found in a pool at Aber Falls, on Tuesday evening. His home village is just 3km (2 miles) from where his body was discovered.

Members of the Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Organisation helped in the operation to recover Mr Gilbert’s body. Spokesman Chris Lloyd said the incident had the mark of an unfortunate accident and North Wales Police said they were not treating Mr Gilbert’s death as suspicious.

Mr Lloyd said: “A lone walker went to the top of the falls – about 120ft [37m] high – to take a photograph.

“He looked into the plunge pool below the upper part of the falls and saw a body of a man. He rapidly retreated to the nearest phone at the nature park exhibition centre and phoned 999.”

The police were mobilised about 5.30pm and the force’s helicopter was sent to the area.

Mr Lloyd continued: “Ogwen team was called out at 6pm. We were rapidly on site to find about six police officers at the top of the falls.

“We made our way up with rescue equipment, fatal incident investigation equipment and water rescue equipment.

“The body was evacuated by 22 Squadron RAF Valley. We then continued to investigate the likely cause of the incident until dusk.”

North West Wales coroner Dewi Pritchard-Jones opened and adjourned an inquest into Mr Gilbert’s death yesterday, Wednesday.
