Greenside, Glenridding. The girl was stretchered to a mountain rescue vehicle waiting at the youth hostel

A teenager had to be carried from a Lake District fell today after slipping and injuring her leg.

The 17-year-old girl from London was taking part in a Duke of Edinburgh’s Award expedition this afternoon when she twisted her ankle. The injury left her unable to continue walking.

Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team was alerted by the police and members of the team went to the student’s aid.

A spokesperson for Patterdale MRT said: “The girl was treated at the scene by members of the rescue team, giving pain relief and splinting the leg. The girl was placed on a stretcher and carried 3km (2 miles) to Greenside Helvellyn youth hostel.”

She was then taken to the team’s rescue base in Patterdale from where an NHS ambulance took her to the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle, for further treatment.
