Spyke in action during his successful munro round

The man who set a new munro record in June will be among starters in this year’s Original Mountain Marathon.

Stephen Pyke, the 45-year-old from Staffordshire, who completed the 283 munros in 39 days, will pair up with 51-year-old Bath runner Tim Laney for the event, which will take place in Dartmoor. The Stone runner, known as Spyke, knocked nine days off the previous record.

Organisers announced this week that the race, which was curtailed after being hit by torrential rain and gales two years ago in Borrowdale, will be based around Okehampton. The precise details will be sent to competitors nearer the event in October.

The two-day event is a test of stamina, speed and navigation skills and evolved from the race formerly known as the Karrimor International Mountain Marathon.

Competitors are forbidden from recce-ing the routes after the venue has been announced.
