Miners' Bridge, on Church Beck above the gill-scrambling site

Rescuers were called to a Lakeland gill for the third time in little more than a month to rescue a woman who was injured while scrambling.

Members of the Coniston Mountain Rescue Team were joined by colleagues from the Duddon and Furness team and the Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue Association, who were in the area at the time, in the rescue at Church Beck Gill.

The site, a popular gill-scrambling route, lies below the Coppermines Valley, under the Old Man of Coniston. The gorge was the scene of a rescue on 12 August to treat a woman injured in the beck, and five days later to a man who also needed rescue. Both had suffered ankle injuries.

Jeff Carroll of the Coniston team said of the latest rescue, at 1.15pm on Saturday: “Members of Coniston MRT went to the assistance of a female who was injured while gorge scrambling in Church Beck Gill above Coniston on Saturday afternoon. Cumbria Ambulance Service paramedics treated the casualty for ankle injuries before evacuation from the gill for transfer to hospital by Cumbria Ambulance Service.”
