Ingleborough, scene of the rescue

Two men were helped from the summit of one of Yorkshire’s Three Peaks after camping on the mountain overnight.

The pair, aged 27 and 30, rang for help after becoming cragfast on steep ground when they awoke to thick cloud and got lost.

The men had pitched camp on Thursday night on the 723m (2,372ft) summit. They were unable to find their way in the morning and the Cave Rescue Organisation came to their aid.

A spokesperson for the team, which carries out both mountain and cave rescues, said: “They were talked off the steep ground above Black Shiver and on to the Crina Bottom footpath by CRO before being met by a team vehicle on Fell Lane and brought down to the road.”

Ingleborough is the second highest of the Three Peaks of the Yorkshire Dales, Whernside having the greatest altitude and Pen-y-ghent the lowest.
