Hillwalkers and climbers are being asked to help with a clean-up of the area round the highest lake on Wales’s highest mountain.

The Snowdonia Society’s litter blitz will take place at Glaslyn, 600m (1,969ft) up on one of the most popular ascent routes of Snowdon.

Volunteers are being sought for the clear-up day around the lake, on the Miner’s Track 480m (1,575ft) below the mountain’s summit.

The event, which follows a similar clean-up last month on Snowdon’s Llanberis Path, will take place on Saturday 6 November.

Some of the area to be cleaned is on difficult terrain and would be especially suited to climbers and experienced mountain walkers.

A spokesperson for the society said: “One group will pick litter from the side of the lake which fringes the path, another group will continue around the back of the lake to collect litter blown from the summit which is on more challenging terrain.

“The Snowdonia National Park Authority will assist in guiding the groups and disposing of the rubbish once collected. We will not be reaching Snowdon’s summit and will be on foot for the ascent and descent.”

Anyone willing to help is asked to meet at the Pen y Pass car park at 10am for the walk up to Glaslyn via the Miners’ Track.

Volunteers should go prepared for a day on the mountain, with sturdy boots, waterproofs, warm clothes, a warm drink and a packed lunch.

Those attending are encouraged to use the Sherpa Bus from various towns around the area as the Pen y Pass car park usually fills quickly and the roads around Pen y Pass also get choked.

They are also asked to ring volunteering officer Jenny Whitmore beforehand on 01286 685498 or email her so organisers have an idea of expected numbers.
