Joe Brown was appointed CBE

Renowned climber Joe Brown has been appointed a CBE in the New Year’s Honours List.

The Manchester-born mountaineer, one of the founders of the Rock and Ice Club, adds the award to his existing MBE.

He completed the first ascent of Kanchenjunga with George Band in 1955 and appeared on the live television broadcast of the Old Man of Hoy in 1967.

The 80-year-old, of Llanberis, Gwynedd,  received the honour for services to rock climbing and mountaineering.

Maureen Richards, of Coniston, Cumbria, was appointed an MBE for her voluntary services to mountain rescue.

Nick Owen, leader of the Langdale and Ambleside Mountain Rescue Team said: “We’re delighted to be able to congratulate long-standing team member, Mo Richards, on the award of an MBE for service to mountain rescue.

“Mo has been on hundreds of rescues, helped save many lives, spent countless hours in the rain, many more grafting behind the scenes. She is an inspiration to us all.”
