Runners in last year's Cracken Edge fell race

A Peak District mountain rescue team is appealing to fit runners to help it buy new Land Rovers.

The Hayfield-based Kinder Mountain Rescue Team is holding its annual Cracken Edge fell race in August and needs to replace its ageing rescue vehicles.

The volunteer team, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, needs £100,000 to buy the new specialist off-road ambulances it uses on rescues on the Peak District’s highest fell Kinder Scout and the high ground surrounding its base in the western Peak.

There will also be a special mountain rescue trophy in the fell race, with rescue teams from across the Peak District vying for the fastest times to take home the award.

Entries to the 11km (7-mile) fell race, which starts at 7.30pm on Wednesday, 3 August, cost £4 each, with all proceeds going to the Kinder MRT funds.

The race starts and ends at the team’s headquarters in Hayfield and the route heads out south towards Cracken Edge, overlooking Chinley. Registration for entrants is on the evening.

The Kinder team rescues hikers, climbers, fellrunners, mountain bikers and the occasional sheep from the wild and high places of the Western Peak district as well as conducting urban searches to assist police in looking for missing people.

More details are on the Kinder MRT website.
