A walker died on one of south Wales’s highest mountains despite rescuers reaching him within minutes of him collapsing.

The 50-year-old was with a group of Dorset teenagers on an expedition when the incident happened yesterday, Saturday, on Corn Du.

Central Beacons Mountain Rescue Team members were with the volunteer within a short time of being alerted about 1.30pm. 30 rescuers from the Central Beacons team, Brecon Mountain Rescue Team and Western Beacons Mountain Search and Rescue Team went to the man’s aid, along with police and an air ambulance.

Penny Brockman, team leader of Central Beacons MRT, said: “Our team was providing support for a two-day mountain event and were on the scene within minutes.

“I’d like to pay tribute to the members of the public who were first on the scene and did everything they could to save the gentleman.

“Although our teams deal with emergencies every week this sort of incident is very rare and has left everyone involved shocked and saddened. We would like to pass on our condolences to the gentleman’s family.”

The casualty was brought down from the mountain by mountain rescue teams to an awaiting ambulance.
