A couple of lost walkers were found after they described their position to rescuers by mobile phone.

The pair, from Sunderland got lost in mist and darkness while walking in the Wet Sleddale area in the eastern Lake District.

Members of the Penrith Mountain Rescue Team were joined by colleagues from the Kendal team and search dogs and handlers in a five-hour search around the Haweswater, Longsleddale and Kentmere Pike areas.

Rescuers quizzed the couple by phone and narrowed down the search area, and they were found near Artle Crag on Branstree, south of Haweswater about 9.30pm.

A spokesperson for Penrith MRT said: “Members of the team escorted the walkers unharmed down to their car at Mardale Head. 12 members of the team were involved for five hours.”
