A man has died while walking on the moors in West Yorkshire.

Calder Valley Search and Rescue Team was alerted at 10.30am by Yorkshire Ambulance Service and went to the aid of the 70-year-old after he collapsed suddenly while walking with friends at Windgate Nick between Silsden and Ilkley.

Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue Association was also called out this morning to assist at the incident on the moors above Addingham, in lower Wharfedale, but the team was stood down after they learnt the man had died.

Pete Farnell of the Calder Valley SRT said: “Unfortunately when paramedics arrived on scene they found that the man had died. The team recovered his body to the nearest road.

“Our sympathies to the man’s family and friends at this distressing time.”

Windgate Nick has eight gritstone climbing routes and is also popular with walkers, lying on the route of the Millennium Way.
