The man who died in a fall from a Snowdonia mountain on Saturday has been named.

Martin Richard Coleman, 36, from the village of Bodfari, Denbighshire, fell 150m (500ft) to his death when a cornice collapsed on the summit of Y Garn in the Glyderau, pitching him into Banana Gully.

A woman who was making her way off the mountain with him was also caught in the avalanche, but only fell a short distance and was uninjured. A second woman escaped the avalanche.

A Mountain Guide who was close-by abseiled into the gully to rescue the woman and then descended to dig out Mr Coleman but the walker had suffered fatal injuries.

Members of the Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Organisation and RAF Leeming Mountain Rescue Team recovered his body.

A helicopter from RAF Valley made repeated flights into Cwm Clyd to airlift the rescuers on to the mountain.

An inquest has been opened and adjourned.
