A mountain rescue team used its boat to reach three paddlers stranded on islands after their canoe capsized.

Keswick Mountain Rescue Team said its boat was with the party within 15 minutes of them being alerted yesterday at 7.05pm.

Two canoeists had managed to swim to Rampsholme Island on Derwent Water and another one of their party had made it to nearby St Herbert’s Island where the group had intended to camp overnight.

Team members checked out the canoeists who had been in the water then brought them back to the Ashness landing stage in Borrowdale, where the Keswick MRT ambulance was waiting with warm clothing, drinks, and the team doctor.

The remaining party member was also rescued from St Herbert’s Island before the trio was taken back to the Keswick MRT headquarters.

The team arranged for the party to stay at the town’s youth hostel as their camping gear was lost when the boat capsized.

Around the time of the water rescue, the Keswick team was also contacted to help a 43-year-old man who was benighted near Seathwaite in Borrowdale.

Initial phone contact with the walker was lost, so two team members from the area mounted a search of the likely footpaths in the area, while six further members went as support, with other team members on standby.

One of the Borrowdale rescuers found the man 40 minutes after his initial call and accompanied him back down off the fell to his car at Seathwaite.
