A spoof video of troops in Afghanistan performing their version of South Korean hit Gangnam Style has helped raise more than £4,000 for a mountain rescue team.

The video, featuring members of the Black Rats currently based at Camp Bastion in Helmand province, shows the troops own rendition of PSY’s viral music hit.

Members of 21 Engineer Regiment are seen performing their own Afghan Style rendition of the song, in various surreal guises including one of the troops dressed as a turkey, Santa dancing in a portable loo, and armed services in monkey and tiger suits, all to a background of various military hardware.

The video and its associated justgiving page have brought in more than £4,500 in three days for the Swaledale Mountain Rescue Team in the Yorkshire Dales.

The team said: “The Royal Engineers from Ripon, North Yorkshire, made the video at their base in Helmand province to support the Swaledale Mountain Rescue Team, a local charity the soldiers have strong links to.

“The filming took place in Camp Bastion with the help of the news team at British Forces Broadcasting Service.”

Filming of the parody of the original video took place during the Engineers’ downtime in Afghanistan.

Swaledale Mountain Rescue Team, which was established in 1968, carries out rescues on the fells and in the caves of Swaledale and Wensleydale.

It has about 40 volunteers and is based at purpose-built rescue headquarters at Catterick Garrison in North Yorkshire.

Donations to the team’s funds can be made on the justgiving website.
