Teenagers are being invited to get wet and muddy in a national park conservation scheme.

The Lake District National Park Authority is seeking young volunteers between the ages of 14 and 19 for its Young Rangers scheme.

A session will be held this coming Saturday to give young people a taste of the conservation projects the authority’s rangers undertake.

Recruits are asked to meet at the Under Loughrigg car park near the village of Rydal for a practical day’s work, starting at 10am and running until 3pm.

Volunteer Young Ranger leader Ruth Kirk said she was looking for young people with bags of enthusiasm and a willingness to help look after the national park.

Throughout the year other Young Ranger days will be held in Keswick, Grasmere, Thirlmere, Bassenthwaite, Windermere, Eskdale and Coniston.

She said: “This is the first of many training days throughout the year so we want to kick-off 2013 in style.

“It’s a great opportunity to get involved in practical conservation work and meet lots of new friends.

“If you’d like to join the Young Rangers this Saturday for a taste of what’s involved, or come along to any of the other activities contact me on ruth.kirk1@virginmedia.com or 07851 721711.”

Volunteers will need to bring waterproofs and sturdy footwear. Other basic equipment will be provided for recruits. More details are on the Young Rangers website.
