Walkers have been warned not to use a Highland shelter after a chimney collapse left it in a dangerous condition.

The Mountain Bothies Association said the stack on the Faindouran Lodge bothy has fallen down and caused significant damage to the roof and walls of the shelter.

An MBA spokesperson said: “The bothy is in a dangerous condition at the moment.

“It should not be used.

“We hope to make a site visit as soon as possible to assess the damage. In the meantime, with the agreement of the estate, the adjacent Pony Shed, about 20 yards from the main lodge, can be used as accommodation.”

The charity, which cares for almost 100 mountain bothies in the UK, said updated information will be posted on its website.

Faindouran Lodge bothy is on Inchrory Estate in the Cairngorms national park. Its location in Glen Avon is marked on Ordnance Survey maps at grid reference NJ 081 062.
