A pair of walkers were rescued after getting lost in darkness on a Lake District fell.

The couple called for help from Steel Fell yesterday when they were unable to find their way off the mountain in snow, mist after night fell.

Langdale Ambleside Mountain Rescue Team was called out about 7.20pm and six members took part in the rescue, which included a dog handler.

The couple were found near the 553m summit of the fell and escorted back down to the valley by rescuers.

The 3½-hour operation was the team’s 11th callout of the year.
