Police have named the young mountaineer who died in last Thursday’s avalanche in the Chalamain Gap.

William Currie, 18, of Penzance, Cornwall, was with a group from Glenmore Lodge national outdoor training centre learning winter skills when he was buried by snow and ice.

Northern Constabulary said a report has been submitted to the procurator fiscal.

RAF officers Squadron Leader Rimon Than and Flight Lieutenant Fran Capps also died in the avalanche in the gorge, which links the CairnGorm Mountain winter sports centre with the Lairig Ghru pass.
