The woman broke her ankle on the path near St Bees Head lighthouse

A walker was rescued after breaking her ankle on the route of the Coast to Coast Walk.

The woman was on the coast path near the St Bees Head lighthouse yesterday when she slipped and injured herself.

Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team was called out at 1pm and 18 volunteer members were involved in the rescue.

The team treated the walker and splinted her ankle before stretchering her to a waiting ambulance.

The rescue lasted 2½ hours and one of the team’s vehicles had to be towed by another after breaking down at the scene.

The team was later called to help a woman at Muncaster Castle near Ravenglass who had suffered a suspected broken hip.

A doctor from an air ambulance treated her at the scene after the Wasdale volunteers were called out at 3.50pm.

The team then stretchered her to a waiting ambulance which took her to hospital.
