Bosses from Britain’s outdoor trade body took their Britain on Foot campaign to the seat of power with a visit to 10 Downing Street.

Outdoor Industries Association chief executive Andrew Denton and communications manager Terry Stephenson delivered an information pack to the Prime Minister’s residence as part of the second phase of their Westminster push.

The pair also met about 40 MPs and peers to get across the importance of its BoF campaign, which aims to get a million extra people active in the outdoors.

The OIA-led campaign is also backed by the British Mountaineering Council, the National Trust and Ramblers, along with outdoor companies, influential individuals and public bodies, including Visit England and Change4Life.

The launch of Britain on Foot was accompanied by the relaunch of the All-Party Group for Adventure and Recreation in Society, set up to tackle the compensation culture and other legal barriers to outdoor education and adventure training, including cutting back on litigation and unreasonable health and safety practices.

Andrew Denton said: “This event was another important step for Britain on Foot.

“After our Westminster launch to the trade last October, we felt that it was crucial that we followed it up once the campaign had gone live.

“During the day, we were able to remind politicians what Britain on Foot is all about and why it is so relevant to everyone.

“It was great to be able to personally hand over ‘activation packs’ to so many MPs and peers in person, and a bonus to be allowed to deliver the same information to the Number 10 campaign team.

“Of course, there are many more MPs and peers who we haven’t yet been able to reach with this information, but these are early days and we will be working hard over the coming months to ensure that Britain on Foot is on the radar of politicians throughout the UK.”
