Hydration specialists Platypus unveiled a slimmed-down version of one of its favourite products at the Friedrichshafen trade show OutDoor.

The Big Zip LP Reservoir – LP stands for low profile – is said by the company to reduce that awkward bulge produced by full water reservoirs when in a rucksack.

The Big Zip LP is 30 per cent slimmer and Platypus said it helps the pack fit better overall.

Erik Flink, director of Platypus hydration and filtration, said: “The Big Zip reservoir has been a staff and customer favourite since its release as the industry’s first wide-mouth reservoir in the early 1990s.

“We made it even better with a new, low-profile design that lies flat against your back and eliminates the tendency of your pack’s back panel to bulge with a full reservoir.

“This design controls the shape of the reservoir, keeping it flat against your back and reduces sloshing.”

The new Big Zip LP reservoir has a BPA-free, taste-free design with a food-grade polyethylene interior and a lightweight and durable polyurethane exterior.

The interior is finished with the delightfully named SlimeGuard silver ion antimicrobial treatment ‘to keep the yucky stuff from colonising’ Platypus said, and the wide-mouth opening makes it easy to fill, wash, and rinse.

The bottom is conveniently fitted with a quick-release hose, allowing quick, easy removal from a pack to clean or refill without rerouting the hose.

Platypus reservoirs are designed and manufactured in the company’s Seattle factory to meet exceptionally high standards for quality, ease-of-use, performance, and durability.

The new Big Zip LP reservoir will come in 2-litre and 3-litre sizes will be go on sale in January 2014, with a 1.5-litre size available in spring 2014.

Recommended prices are £28.99 to 30.99 in the UK, and €33.95 to 36.95 in Ireland.
