The walker collapsed while tackling Striding Edge

A walker has died after collapsing on a Lake District ridge.

The 67-year-old man from Windermere was on Striding Edge on Helvellyn today when he suffered a heart attack.

Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team was called out and the Pride of Cumbria helicopter from the Great North Air Ambulance also flew to the scene, along with a Sea King search and rescue helicopter from RAF Boulmer in Northumberland after being alerted about noon.

The air ambulance dropped a doctor and paramedic at the site on England’s third highest mountain and then airlifted members of Patterdale MRT on to the mountain.

An air ambulance spokesperson said: “Resuscitation attempts were made at the scene but unfortunately the male died at the scene.”

The walker’s body was winched from Striding Edge by the RAF helicopter crew.
