A mountain biker was airlifted to hospital in a critical condition after crashing on a Lake District pass.

The 28-year-old man from Carlisle suffered serious head and chest injuries in the incident yesterday on the Honister Pass between Buttermere and Borrowdale.

The Great North Air Ambulance was scrambled at 3.45pm and flew to the site.

The helicopter’s doctor anesthetised the rider at the roadside before he was flown by the Guardian of the North aircraft to Preston Royal Infirmary where it landed 17 minutes after take-off.
