A man has died after getting into difficulties in a Lake District reservoir.

The body of the 27-year-old was recovered from the water at Thirlmere this afternoon.

A 22-year-old woman from managed to get out of the water and was revived by a bystander.

Emergency services were alerted at 3pm by a member of the public after the pair, from Pakistan, were seen in distress in the water.

The Great North Air Ambulance flew to the scene and a doctor from the helicopter treated the woman before she was flown to Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle where her condition was described as stable.

Fire and rescue service crew members pulled the man from the water but he was pronounced dead at the scene by air ambulance staff.

Keswick Mountain Rescue Team’s swiftwater technicians also went to the scene and helped in the search for the swimmers.

The team members also helped with the recovery of the man’s body.

Cumbria Constabulary said: “Police have informed his family and are supporting them during this difficult time.”

Police said they are not treating the incident as suspicious.
