The Stornoway Coastguard helicopter joined the rescue operation

A walker has died after collapsing on a Highland mountain.

Dundonnell Mountain Rescue Team was alerted about 1.45pm yesterday after the 61-year-old got into difficulties on Am Faochagach, east of Beinn Dearg near Ullapool in Wester Ross.

Police Scotland said the Stornoway Coastguard also flew to the scene.

A spokesperson said: “Attempts were made to revive the male but unfortunately he was found to have died prior to arrival of R100 [the Coastguard helicopter].”

Police said the man was from Scotland’s central belt and was walking with two friends at the time.

The spokesperson said: “His family has requested privacy and time to notify family members and no further details will be released at time.”
