Police in the Lake District are appealing for information about a man they want to question about the theft of charity collection boxes.

Cumbria Constabulary is investigating a number of incidents across Ambleside, Grasmere and Kirby Lonsdale areas where staff in local businesses have been distracted and the charity box which is on the premises has been stolen.

The boxes include those collecting vital funds for local mountain rescue teams.

A spokesperson said: “Cumbria Police are appealing for information about the whereabouts of Derrick Matthews, aged 54, who is wanted in connection with numerous offences of theft of charity boxes committed in the Cumbria area during the last month.

“Police would like to speak to Mr Matthews, as they believe he may have some information about the incidents.

“Officers are asking all hotels, guest houses and shop owners: if you see this man please contact the police.

“Cumbria Constabulary is appealing for him to hand himself in or for anyone who knows his whereabouts or has seen him recently to contact the police on 101.

“Alternatively they can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
