Heather Morning

Two luminaries of the Scottish outdoors will pass on their knowledge to help increase safety on the country’s mountains.

Heather Morning and Dave ‘Heavy’ Whalley will each deliver a free lecture next month, outlining the essential skills for those heading for the hills in winter.

The free talks, at Aviemore’s Mountain Cafe, will cover navigation, avalanche awareness, route choice, equipment, weather and other subjects. The lectures are illustrated by photography, videos and personal anecdotes from the two.

Heather Morning is the Mountaineering Council of Scotland’s mountain safety adviser. With a lifetime’s experience in the mountains, she has been a professional mountaineer for 20 years and for the past 12 has been an active member of the Cairngorm Mountain Rescue Team.

‘Heavy’ Whalley was a member of the RAF Mountain Rescue Service for 36 years. He was team leader of RAF Leuchars, RAF Kinloss and deputy team leader at RAF Valley in north Wales and, though now retired, is still active both on the hill and in mountain-safety matters.

Heather Morning’s lecture is on 12 February, and Heavy Whalley will speak on 19 February.

Both talks begin at 8pm and are sponsored by the Munro Society.
