Young visitors to the Lake District are being urged to explore the world of the old fellwanderer Alfred Wainwright.

Half-term events at the Lake District Visitor Centre north of Windermere will include three history detective sessions delving into the past of the celebrated author and artist.

Ruth Suddaby, learning coordinator of the centre at Brockhole, said: “This year we’re encouraging children to explore a day in the life of the famous author Alfred Wainwright.

“They can see his school report, read his letters and even have a go at finishing his sketches.”

The free sessions will run on Monday, Wednesday and Friday next week. No booking is necessary.

Youngsters can also get up close to Charlie the chinchilla and other animals including sugar gliders, polecats and a hedgehog. Booking for the Thursday Silverband session is advised and the cost is £4.

There are also birdwatching events and wild art workshops.

Details are on the Brockhole website.
