A coroner has opened an investigation into the death of a well known mountaineer who died in a fall on the Carneddau in north Wales.
Mike Pinney, 62, of Yeovil, Somerset, fell 100ft while walking with a group on Carnedd Llewelyn on 9 March.
He was descending from Pen yr Helgi Du to the Bwlch Eryl Farchog when he slipped on a greasy rock and fell about 30m.
He suffered head injuries in the fall, and members of his group performed cardio-pulmonary resuscitation on him while an RAF Sea King helicopter flew to the scene.
He was flown to Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor but pronounced dead on arrival.
Mr Pinney was chair of Yeovil Mountaineering Club and had extensive climbing experience.
He was a member of the Alpine Club and had taken part in first ascents in the Himalaya and also undertook an expedition to Antarctica.
The Solihull-born climber also had extensive mountaineering experience in the Alps.
A memorial service will be held at St John’s Church, Yeovil, on Monday 24 March.
A Much Loved page has been created for tributes to Mr Pinney and for donations to the Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Organisation, which was involved in the rescue of the fallen climber.
North West Wales assistant coroner Nicola Jones has opened an investigation into his death. No date has yet been set for an inquest.

17 March 2014Such a shame makes me think of all the times I have slipped on the hills without a thought. Just goes to show it does not matter how much experience you have
