Two mountain rescue teams went to the aid of an elderly man who became ill while walking in the Lake District.

The 84-year-old began to feel faint on the fells above Ullswater today.

The man, from north Wales, was walking near Auterstone Crag with his son when he got into difficulties.

Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team was called out about 1pm and seven of its volunteers were joined by three members of the Penrith team in the operation.

The Great North Air Ambulance also flew to the scene and rescuers stretchered him to the helicopter, which then flew him for further treatment to Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle.

The rescue lasted two hours.
