Mountain rescuers and air ambulance crew went to the aid of a woman who collapsed while on a backpacking trip in the Lake District.

The 21-year-old from Canterbury, Kent, was near the top of the Scarth Gap pass above Buttermere today when she became exhausted.

The walker was on the second day of a two-day journey.

Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team was called out at 1.10pm and the Great North Air Ambulance also flew to the area.

A paramedic from the helicopter assessed her before she was helped down from the fell by members of the rescue team.

The incident involved 20 volunteers from the Cockermouth team.
