Rescuers rigged up ropes to lower the stretcher down the Wessenden Valley

A walker was rescued from the Pennine Way after he became ill.

Holme Valley Mountain Rescue Team was called out on Monday when the man, in his mid-50s, got into difficulties on the moors above Marsden in West Yorkshire.

A passing group of walkers helped the man at the scene in Blakely Clough between Wessenden and Black Moss.

Rescuers were alerted by the group about 1.30pm and the Yorkshire Air Ambulance also flew to the scene.

The walker was treated by team members and paramedics from the helicopter before he was carried to an ambulance at Wessenden Lodge.

A team spokesperson said: “12 members of Holme Valley Mountain Rescue Team stretchered the casualty for approximately a mile over the moors, and rigged up a rope system to lower him down the steep side of Wessenden Valley, before carrying him up the path to the waiting ambulance.”
