A walker was airlifted from a Lakeland fell after injuring himself when he fell 65ft.

The 72-year-old, from Somerset, was with his wife between Threshthwaite Mouth and Thornthwaite Beacon today when the incident happened.

Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team was called out about 2.30pm and the North West Air Ambulance also flew to the scene where the walker had suffered head, knee and hand injuries in the fall and could not walk off the fell.

A Patterdale MRT spokesperson said: “The man was well enough to walk to the helicopter with assistance and was flown to Lancaster for further treatment.

“His wife, who was very happy to meet a bunch of ‘handsome men’, walked down to her car with the rest of the rescue team.”

The 3½-hour rescue involved 11 volunteer team members.
