The woman was stretchered down to Seathwaite after injuring herself on the Sty Head path

Walkers were praised for trying to carry an injured woman from a Lake District fell.

The group eventually had to call out rescuers after night fell on the path between Sty Head and Seathwaite in the central fells.

Keswick and Penrith Mountain Rescue Teams had been involved in the search for a walker and recovery of his body on Helvellyn when they received a call for help about 9.45pm yesterday.

The 18-year-old woman had turned her ankle badly. A Keswick MRT spokesperson said: “To their credit, the members of her party tried to carry her down, but were overtaken by darkness.”

Rescuers went to the site and stretchered the injured walker back down to Seathwaite in an operation lasting 2½ hours and involving 15 Keswick and four Penrith team volunteers.

An ambulance then took her for further treatment to Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle.
