A grateful walker sent a text thanking rescuers who led him to safety after he got lost on a Brecon Beacons mountain.

The Bridgend man, in his early 50s, called for help after losing his way in the Black Mountains in the East of the national park.

Longtown Mountain Rescue Team was called out on Wednesday night after the walker got lost on Waun Fach. He set out in the afternoon but became disoriented when rain and low cloud set in on the 811m (2661ft) hill the highest in the Black Mountains.

Deputy team leader Luke Lewis said: “He had read about the walk in a book but unfortunately the weather set in and he realised he was lost.

“He did exactly the right thing in calling for help and later texted us to thank the team for all the help he received.”

The man was found about 2am on Thursday morning. Team members assessed his condition and he was then walked off the mountain.

The six-hour rescue involved 11 volunteers from the Abergavenny-based team and was their third callout in 24 hours.
