A woman has died while mountaineering in the Cairngorms.

Emergency services were alerted to the incident about 2.30pm today when they received reports of someone injured near the Pygmy Ridge in Coire an t-Sneachda on Cairn Gorm.

It is believed the woman was caught in a rockfall in the corrie.

Cairngorm Mountain Rescue Team members went to the site, and a Royal Navy Sea King helicopter from HMS Gannet in Ayrshire also flew to the scene in the Northern Corries.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Sadly, the woman could not be resuscitated.

“The woman will not be identified until all next of kin have been informed. A report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.”

Pygmy Ridge is in the Aladdin’s Buttress area of the corrie.

Last month, the Mountaineering Council of Scotland warned walkers and climbers against using the Goat Track in Coire an t-Sneachda because a rockfall had made the path, one of the popular ascent routes on the mountain’s plateau from the corrie, unsafe.

An MCofS spokesperson said in August: “The rockfall was discovered by path builders heading into Coire an t-Sneachda. They carried out an initial examination, which showed the area to be very unstable and dangerous.”
