A Lakeland mountain rescue team revealed one of its members got only four hours’ sleep during a busy 40-hour period last week.

Kendal Mountain Search and Rescue Team said it had seven callouts in the period, involving working with nine other teams on rescues, with 40 hours’ work involved.

But it said there had been positive outcomes from all seven rescues.

John Fitch of the team said: “We have been called out to a variety of incidents included searching for missing people in Langdale, Kentmere and Staveley in Cartmel; a mountain biker with a head injury on Farleton Knott; a female with a lower leg injury in the Howgills; a gentleman with chest pains at Leighton Moss Bird Reserve and two injured climbers on Gimmer Crag in the Langdale Valley.

“One team member managed to get four hours’ sleep in 40 hours during one particular period and many others were in a similar situation.

“We are now enjoying a quiet few days which is allowing us to recharge our batteries and get some rest.”
