A walker has died after falling 50ft down a cliff while on a Ramblers’ trip on the south coast of England.

The 68-year-old was taking part in a walk organised by HF Holidays when she fell 15m from a path near Worth Matravers on the Isle of Purbeck.

Her fellow walkers raised the alarm and a Coastguard helicopter airlifted her from the cliff foot and flew her to Dorset County Hospital in Dorchester, but she was pronounced dead.

The walker was part of a group from Amersham Ramblers in Buckinghamshire which was visiting the area on Tuesday when the incident happened.

Dorset Police said they did not believe there are any suspicious circumstances. The coroner has been informed.

Ramblers’ chief executive Benedict Southworth said: “Our deepest sympathies go out to the family. We are always deeply saddened to hear of the death of a walker.”

Jim Forward, chief executive of the outdoor co-operative that was leading the walk, said: “Everyone at HF Holidays is shocked and saddened by this accident and our thoughts are with her family and friends.”
