A climber was airlifted to hospital after suffering serious injuries in a fall on a Somerset crag.

Avon and Somerset Search and Rescue was called out about 4.20pm yesterday to Goblin Combe, east of Yatton.

Ambulance paramedics and a hazardous area response team joined the volunteers from the search and rescue team at the site and an RAF Sea King helicopter from RMB Chivenor in Devon flew to the scene.

The injured climber was stabilised at the crag and the helicopter crew then winched the casualty into the aircraft from the base of the cliff and flown to hospital for further treatment.

The rescue lasted more than three hours.

Goblin Combe has more than 150 named climbing routes on its limestone cliffs.
