The money will be used to provide swiftwater rescue gear for the team

A mountain rescue team received a share of a community fund to help equip its swiftwater experts.

The Scarborough and Ryedale team was one of three groups to share £8,000 from the Duke of York’s Community Initiative’s Innovation Fund.

The duke presented the award to the team’s incident controller Ian Hugill at a ceremony held at Magna in Rotherham, attended by 43 community groups from across Yorkshire.

Prince Andrew said: “I take my hat off to you for all the good works you do. You know how to make a difference.”

Mr Hugill said the money would buy personal protection equipment and water rescue equipment for the team’s swiftwater flood rescue technicians and water first responders.

A team spokesperson said: “Increasingly, their work involves search and rescue activities in and around water, be that water margin searches, rescues in and around water or support to the statutory blue light emergency services in flood and storm surge incidents.”

Scarborough and Ryedale Mountain Rescue Team celebrates its 50th anniversary next year. In 2013 members attended 60 incidents and so far this year, the team has been called out 46 times.
